She started her career as an actor on television, appearing in the television movies Malibu (1983), California Girls (1985). She also played Gwendoline, a comedienne in the Land of the Yik-Yak (both 1984) as well as Bachelor Party (1985). Kitaen was a popular choice for her roles in numerous heavy metal music videos. These included Ratt's "Back for More" (1984) and Whitesnake's "Still of the Night", "Is This Love" and "Here I Go Again" (all 1987).In the early 2000s, Kitaen transitioned into appearing in reality TV shows which included The Surreal Life (2006) and Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew (2008) and "Here I Go Again," the latter of which explored Kitaen's struggles with addiction. Julie Kitaen was the youngest of three children. She was born in San Diego in 1961 to Linda Kitaen (nee Taylor), an actress and a former beauty pageant participant , as well as Terry Kitaen who worked for the neon sign industry. Kitaen's mother was from Irish as well as Scottish descent was married to Terry Kitaen (an employee of a neon sign company). Her father was Russian Jewish. Kitaen was born Jewish. When she was at the age of 12 years old, she began to utilize the nickname "Tawny" that she invented on her own initiative.
