The film was widely lauded by critics, as well as the performance of the entire cast (which comprised Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris), and Kathleen Quinlan. The film garnered nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Hanks was the voice of Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's 1995 computer-animated feature Toy Story (1995). His directorial debut came a year later, with the film The Thing You Do! The story of the fall and the rise of a rock band. Hanks also performs the role of a music producer. Richard Schickel of Time magazine said that his performance was "charming", and most critics agreed that Hanks' portrayal ensured him a place in the most popular romantic comedy stars of his time.
